Code of Ethical Conduct for Mentors

The following establishes a set of behaviors for mentors as part of the Neopte Foundation, Inc. Mentoring Program.

I. Responsibility

a. The onus is on both the mentor and mentee to be aware that their behavior has the potential to negatively impact the mentoring relationship.

b. Establish trusting relationships, modeling high standards and practice, and understanding diverse backgrounds, traditions, and cultures.

II. Confidentiality

a. The Mentor is responsible for maintaining and respecting the confidentiality of all the information shared during the mentoring relationship, as they may hear sensitive and personal information. While the purpose of The Neopte Foundation, Inc. Mentoring Program is to provide guidance and direction to youth from low-opportunity backgrounds in their pursuit of higher education, there may be times when personal information is shared.

b. However, if such information is dangerous or illegal, the mentor should use their best judgment and contact local authorities.

III. Professionalism

a. Induct the mentee into professional norms and values, helping them to understand the importance of their academic journey ahead and how you can assist them

b. Under no circumstance shall the Mentor push the mentee to take part in a paid mentoring or career coaching program managed or conducted by themselves or a third-party.

IV. Discrimination

a. Under no circumstances shall the Mentor discriminate against the mentee based on race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and national origin.
